Not so long ago it seemed like the most common binocular was the old faithful 7x35. And while 7 power binos are still widely used by stargazers, the birding crowd seems to have moved away from 7 power, in favor of 8x42 and 10x42 glasses.

I'm not sure of the reason for this, but here are several reasons to put 7 power binos back on your list. First of all, there's a bigger field-of-view with 7 power binoculars. And the depth of field will probably be larger also. Second, it will be slightly easier to hold a steady image with the lower power. Some models will also be lighter and smaller than their 8 and 10 power cousins. And last, but certainly not least, 7 power binoculars will save you a few bucks, because they're typically cheaper than 8 or 10 power models.

So before you get caught-up in the race for more magnification, at least consider a 7 power model - maybe the Swarovski 7x42 SLC, or a Zeiss 7x42 FL. It may be just what you're looking for.
